The ability of the current crop of trials competitors and their skill level is at an all time American high. I haven’t seen the competitive nature, drive and ability exercised like it is now in the 20-plus years that I have been involved at the National Trials level.
My name is Kip Webb. I have been a past team member of the American Trial des Nations effort on three separate occasions. For the last four years I have supported the effort and participated with my son Cody. I really had to come to terms with whether I was the right person to take over the Team Manager position. The past managers have done an outstanding job, starting with the Wickers (whom I was involved with). These two people, Marilyn & Wick were instrumental in getting attention and a team together for the first TdN effort in 1984, in what was at that time communist Poland. The Wickers funded this effort solely thru tee shirt sales and the generous donations from clubs and trials events. They traveled to every National event for many years; to say they were dedicated is an understatement.
Martin Belair then stepped in to lead for the next ten years. Martin was a competent competitor in his day and we rode against each other at Saddleback, Escape Country in the 70’s. Martin brought the element of businessman as well as rider. Ted Gansberger stepped in to fill Martin’s shoes for the last couple years. I have had the honor and pleasure to work with both of them.
Now it is my turn. My primary reason to manage this team is that I see a very active group of riders, both current and up-and-coming. These young men & women have shown skill and determination above anything I have witnessed in US riders in the many years I have been involved in this sport. I personally feel that it is time to put forth an effort that will recognize, support and promote their continued growth. The foundation needs to be rebuilt. Many of the things we have been working on will be a benefit for the future as well as now. Alignment with corporate sponsors as well as from the current dedicated clubs and individuals is paramount in our effort to grow, as our riders continue to rise. This is easier said than done, but if we do not try, what will be the incentive for the future?
I for one do not feel we can sit on the sidelines waiting for someone to come to us, we need to find that someone and sell these young achievers. There will be many format changes that will cement the foundation and will be outlined on this, the official TdN website, which will be updated regularly. I have had conversations with many clubs and members already and look forward to expanding this. A grassroots effort needs the support of all the people who share the same passion. I have found this passion in all the trials riders that I talk with. There are many competent, willing people in the trials community and it is up to us to rally together and build this into a reality.
Sincerely Yours In Trials
Kip Webb
